Logan Blanks Spartanburg Methodist

Wadley, AL - Behind a solid offensive performance and dominate pitching, the Vols improved to 4-0 on the year by shutting out Spartanburg Methodist 8-0 on Saturday. Logan is currently 2-0 in the Southern Union Invitational with a tilt with 5th ranked Dyersburg State on Sunday remaining. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

SMC looked poised to open the scoring in the bottom of the first after a lead off double and a wild pitch putting a runner on third with no outs, but starter Tanner Gordon settled in and struck out the side. From that point on, it was all Vols. In the top of the second Shane Peisker would open the scoring with 2-run homer to left center. Logan would add single runs in the 3rd and 4th before pushing the game to 7-0 in the sixth, highlighted by a Jack Wilson 2-run home run. Seven different Volunteers would record at lease one hit, with Jeremy Gaines leading the way, going 4-5. Hunter Combs would add three hits, including two doubles. On the mound, Gordon (2-0) was lights out for the Vols, picking up his second victory of the year, going six strong innings, giving up three hits, and striking out seven. Freshman Cole Hensel would earn the save going three innings, giving up two hits, while striking out three.

"We put a complete game together, we pitched it well from the beginning to the end, handled the baseball well and swung the bat well from top to bottom." Head Coach Kyle Surprenant said. "Tanner (Gordon) had 3 pitches going for strikes and did a great job keeping hitters off balance. We can't ask for much more than that out of our starting pitcher. I thought we had a solid approach all game long in the box, we took advantage of plus counts and drove the ball all over the yard.  It was nice to see Jack (Wilson) and Shane (Peisker) both step up and hit home runs leading to a couple multi-run innings."
