Logan Sweeps Doubleheader from Lincoln Trail

Carterville, IL – The Logan baseball used dominate pitching and timely hitting to sweep Lincoln Trail, 3-0 and 6-0, on Thursday. The two wins put the Vols at 13-9 on the year and 3-2 in GRAC play and stops to a five-game losing streak. The two teams will finish the series tomorrow (Friday) at Lincoln Trail, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. Fans can following the game action via live gamecast on GameChanger.

In game one, Trey Riley was dominant on the mound for the Vols. Riley (3-1) would throw a complete game while striking out 13. The Statesmen wouldn't have a runner reach second base after the 6th inning. The scoring would open in the 6th for the Vols when Collin Clayton would hit a 2-out RBI double to score Jeremy Gaines to give Logan a 1-0 lead. JALC would pull away in the 8th when Reid Pope would pinch hit and connect for a 2-run homerun to center. Clayton would lead the offense going 2-4 at the plate.

Game two followed the same script as game one. Logan's starter Brenden Heiss (3-0) would throw 6 strong innings, scattering three hits while striking out 13. Freshman Andrew Zenner would get the final three outs and strike out one without giving up a hit.  The Vols would use a big four run 4th inning to take control of the game, highlighted by an RBI double from Jack Wilson. Logan would finish the scoring in the sixth when they would add two more runs, pushing the lead to 6-0. The Vols were led offensively by the three-headed attack of Sam Frontino, Jack Wilson, and Hunter Combs, who would all collect two hits each. Gaines and Clayton would pick up the other two hits of the game.

"Our pitching dominated the day from beginning to end." Head Coach Kyle Surprenant said. " Trey (Riley) did an outstanding job commanding the zone. Hunter Combs did a great job controlling the running game from behind the plate and you pair that with a key double play late in the game allowed Riley to keep his pitch count down and go the distance. Heiss and Zenner did a great job in game two. Anytime you get 27 strikeouts from your pitchers in a double header you know you are going to have an opportunity to sweep. Offensively, Collin Clayton continued to swing it well for us along with Reid Pope and Sam Frontino making the most of their opportunities today and playing a big pat of our offense. As we move forward we are going to need guys to continue to step up when they get called on and I'm confident they will continue to do so."
