Zarling’s Walk-off HR helps Vols go 2-0 To Open 2019

Millington, TN – Baseball season is finally here and the Logan Baseball team started the year off with a bang, literally. A 10th inning solo homer from Sophomore Sam Zarling gave the Vols a 7-6 victory of Three Rivers and in the night cap, Logan would cruise past Southwest Tennessee 13-2 in six innings. The Vols are 2-0 on the year and will be back in action again on February 15-17 when they travel to Wadley, AL for the Southern Union Innovational.

The season opener saw the Vols trail early after Three Rivers would tally two in the first inning. Logan would answer back in the second tying the game. In the third the Vols would take a 5-2 lead with an Ashton Creal sac fly and a 2-out 2-RBI double from Sam Zarling. Three Rivers would rally for two in the 4th and one run in the 6th to tie the game back at five. Game would stay tied until the 9th, when both teams would scratch across a run. After a scoreless top of the 10th, Zarling would play hero and take the second pitch he saw well over the left field fence for the walk-off solo home run to win the game. Jeff Purnell (1-0) would pick up the win in relief. Johnny Ray would get the start on the mound for the Vols, going two innings, giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out five. Cooper Trinkle and Hunter Combs would join Zarling by collecting two hits each.

Game two saw far less drama as the Logan bats would open the game on fire. The Vols posted a four run 1st to set the tone for the game, batting all nine in the lineup during the frame; capped by a 2-run double by Hunter Combs and a 2-run single by Zach Parks. Logan would push the game out of reach in the second by  adding another four runs, capitalizing on three walks. Southwest Tennessee would answer for their only two runs in the bottom half, but Logan would get those right back with an RBI double from Hunter Sullivan, who would later score on a wild pitch. The score would remain 10-2 until the 6th when Trent Shelby would finish the scoring with a two RBI single. Luke Brown, Sullivan, Hunter Combs, Sammy Frontino, and Zach Parks would all collect multiple hits for the Vols. Andy Peters (1-0) would get the start and win, while Brodie Lenon, Hunter Sullivan, and Joe Darlin would combined to throw four scoreless innings in relief.
