Vols Finish Off Series Sweep of SSC

Carbondale, IL - The Logan Volunteers improve to 8-0 on the year with a doubleheader sweep of South Suburban on Monday. The Vols bats were hot all day, taking game one 15-6 and game two 7-3. Logan will be back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Triton College at Logan, with first pitch scheduled at 1 p.m. The Triton series has been moved up from Saturday and Sunday due to the pending forecast.

Game one saw the Logan bats strike first in the 3rd when Hunter Sullivan would make the Bulldogs pay for a pair of 2-out walks with a 2-RBI single. SSC would answer right back to take a 3-2 lead in the 4th. The score would hold until the 6th when Hunter Combs would tie the game up with an RBI single and Cody Jansen would give Logan the 4-3 lead with a sac fly. The Vols would get some breathing room in the 7th when the would strike for four runs; Hunter Sullivan, Hunter Combs, and Ashton Creal would all drive in runs in the inning. SSC would cut the lead to 8-6 in the 8th and get the tying run to the plate, but Justin Bauersachs would come in relief for the Vols and shut down the rally. The Logan Bats would use that momentum to explode for a seven run inning punctuated by a Trent Shelby grand slam to cap the scoring. Hunter Combs would lead the offensive explosion with a 3-5 with 3 RBI game. Brodie Lenon would get the start on the mound for the Vols, going 4.1 innings, giving up three runs (zero earned) while striking out six. Hunter Ralls (1-0) would pick up the win going three innings giving up three runs on four hits, while striking out four in relief. Bauersachs (1) would pick up the save going 1.2 innings, giving up only one hit and striking out one.

Game two saw a lot of action early. SCC would scratch one in the top of the 1st, but Hunter Combs would give the Vols the lead with a 2-run blast over the left field fence; Ashton Creal would push the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single. The Bulldogs would tie the game up in the 2nd. The Vols would take the lead for good when Trent Shelby would come up with a 2-RBI 2-out double in the 3rd. JALC would get two more insurance runs in the 6th capping the scoring with a Hunter Sullivan sac fly. Ashton Creal would led the offense with three hits and four stolen bases, while Luke Brown and Hunter Combs would add two hits each. Hunter Sullivan (1-0) would get the start and the win on the mound, going five innings giving up three runs (one earned) on three hits, while striking out two. Gabe Schimpf (1) would get the save in his first appearance on the mound going two innings, not allowing a base runner and striking out five.
