Vols Blow-Out Rend Lake in Doubleheader Sweep

Carterville, IL - The Logan Volunteers put finished off a 3-0 week with a doubleheader sweep of Rend Lake College on Wednesday. The Vols would cruise by the Warriors taking game one 13-5 and game two 10-1. With the victories the Vols improve to 34-7 on the year and 14-2 in GRAC play. The Vols will have a rare extend break due to the rain and the holiday weekend, but Logan will be back in action on Tuesday when Shawnee CC will travel to Carterville for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Game one saw the Vols jump out of the gates; getting a solo home run from Cody Jansen in the 1st inning and explode for five runs in the 2nd thanks to four extra base hits, capped by a 2-run home run from Luke Brown. The Vols 6-0 lead would held until the 4th when the Warriors would start to make a comeback picking up two runs in the inning and two more in the 5th cutting the Logan lead to 6-4. The Vols would add one in the 5th and blow the game open in the 6th with a 5-run frame highlighted by a back-to-back 2-out RBI singles from Ashton Creal and Cooper Trinkle. Rend Lake would get one back in the 8th, but Ashton Creal's solo blast in the bottom of the frame would finish the scoring for the day. At the plate, the Vols would smack out 15 hits including, six extra base hits. Cooper Trinkle would lead the charge going 4-4 with 3 RBI and a double. Luke Brown and Ashton Creal would both collect three hits, including a home run for the game. On the mound, Jeffrey Purnell (7-0) would give the Vols another quality start going 7 innings, giving up four runs, only two earned, while scattering six hits and striking out eight.

Game two saw the Vols bats would smack out 10 hits, including three more home runs to pace starter Luke Seed who would throw a complete game to earn his fourth win on the year. The Warriors would strike first capitalizing on getting the first two guys on to open the game, but Hunter Sullivan would tie the game at one with a solo shot on the first pitch he saw in the 1st. Gabe Schimpf would come up big in the 2nd giving the Vols the lead with a 2-out, 2-RBI single. would contuine to hammer the Warrior pitching in the 3rd with solo home runs from Cody Jansen and Zach Parks. The Vols would add three more runs in the 4th to push the lead to 9-1. Luke Seed would handle the rest, only allowing four Warriors to reach base after the 1st inning, none of which would advance past 2nd base. Seed (4-0) would throw a complete game, giving up one run on four hits while striking out 13. Eight different Vols would collect a hit for the game, with Gabe Schmipf leading the way going 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hunter Sullivan would also collect two hits for the game.
