Current and Former Vols Named Top Prospects by National Publications
As the fall semester winds down the college baseball season is just around the corner. With the John A. Logan baseball team beginning practice in less than a month, two of the premier publications covering college baseball have tabbed several Vols as top prospects.
Prep Baseball Report’s Top 100 Junior College Prospects included three John A. Logan Volunteers. Andrew Peters was named the #3 junior college draft prospect in the country while Johnny Ray came in at #19 and Hunter Sullivan was named to the watch list. In PBR’s Top 150 College Prospects list the Vols were the only junior college that had multiple players selected. Peters came in at #67 which was the highest amongst all junior college players in the country. Ray was the second Volunteer to be chosen for the list as he came in at #143.
Perfect Game’s Top 100 Junior College Prospect list included the same three players and saw Peters ranking in at #4, Ray at #6 and Sullivan at #94. John A. Logan was the only school in the country that had two players in the top 10 and one of only 13 schools that had three or more players named in the top 100. Perfect Game’s Top 100 College Prospect list included Peters at #59. This list is composed of all draft eligible players from all levels of college baseball. Peters was one of only four junior college players on this list. In Perfect Game’s Top 300 Overall Draft Prospects, which includes draft eligible players from all levels of college baseball as well as the top high school players in the country, two current and one former Volunteer were selected. Peters #114 and Ray #259 were two of only nine junior college players to make this list and once again John A. Logan was the only junior college in the country to be represented more than once on the list. Former Vol and current Junior at Indiana University Tanner Gordon ranked #252 in PG’s Top 300 Overall Draft Prospects.
“This is a tremendous honor for these guys. I see how much time and work they put in and I’m happy for them to be getting the recognition they deserve.” said head baseball coach Kyle Surprenant. “It says a lot about our players, coaches and program as a whole. We have a team full of players that have bought in and work hard each and every day. Our staff; Coach Kirkpatrick, Coach Morey and Coach Brough do a great job recruiting and developing players. This should be another exciting season for us and I am looking forward to getting started.”
The Volunteers will begin practice on January 10th and have a double header scheduled for February 9th against Southwest Tennessee CC and State Fair CC in Millington, TN.
