Shelby Looks Forward to Region Tournament

CARTERVILLE — Amanda Shelby has 61 wins in three seasons as head coach of the John A. Logan College Lady Vols basketball team.

Her team, currently 21-8 this season, is celebrating a strong finish, winning nine of their last 10 games and finishing second in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC).

The Lady Vols pulled away to a 31-point victory Friday again Kaskaskia. Following the win, Shelby learned that two of her players, Destiny Cozart and Farasia Hodge, had been named to the GRAC and NJCAA Region 24 all-region teams.

The Lady Vols play in the Region 24 Tournament at home against Lincoln Trail on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The two teams spilt games in league play.

"We've had a good season with a strong finish," Shelby said. "As we enter the district tournament, I'm very proud of these ladies for putting in the hard work and trusting the process. We are looking forward to the tournament because we feel we have a great shot at winning it."

Shelby explained that Cozart and Hodge "have been two players who have really carried us this year."

Cozart, a two-time all-conference and all-region pick, "can really fill up the stat lines with her scoring, rebounding, and assists. Her leadership qualities have really flourished as a sophomore."

Hodge provides a strong presence on the inside for the Lady Vols. "Without her, our team wouldn't be where we are at now," Shelby said. "She can be an unstoppable force on the inside with her rebounding, scoring, and defense."

The Lady Vols have four players averaging scoring in double figures: Shaniya Whitsell, 11; Kaili Bacon, 11; Cozart, 17; and Hodge, 13.
