Vols Take Down #2 Wabash Valley

Carterville, IL - Dominant pitching and early offense led to a Vols victory in their conference opener over visiting #2 Wabash Valley College on Friday. The win puts Logan at 11-4 overall on the year and 1-0 in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play. The two teams will clash again tomorrow for a double header at Wabash Valley. First pitch is set for noon.

Logan would ride the right arms of Trey Riley and Cole Hensel to the victory. Riley (2-1) would put together a quality start, going six innings, giving up two hits, striking out eight, while not allowing a run. Hensel would finish the job, collecting the final nine outs, giving up one run on three hits, while striking out three, and picking up his second save of the year.  Jeremy Gaines would get the Logan offense going right away, with a solo home run to left in the first. The Vols would follow-up with a two spot in the second inning with an AJ Lewis sacrifice fly, scoring Jack Wilson and an Ashton Creal two-out double scoring Cameron Touchette to give Logan the 3-0 lead. Creal led the way with a 2-3 day at the plate, the Vols would only collect six hits on the day.

"Trey and Cole put us on their back today." Head Coach Kyle Surprenant said. "I thought they did a great job keeping Wabash off balance and we did good job of handling the baseball behind them. Jeremy and Ashton came up with big hits early on and it proved to be enough. I would like to see us add to the lead throughout the course of the game, but you have to give some credit to (Wabash's) pitchers for settling into the game."
