Vols Baseball Sweeps Day One of Southern Union Invitational

Wadley, AL – The Logan Vols improve to 4-0 on the year with two victories at the Southern Union Invitational on Friday. Behind Johnny Ray on the mound Logan defeated host team Southern Union 9-1 to open the day and beat Dyersburg State 3-2 to finish off the day. The Vols will be back in action again tomorrow, looking to finish the Invite 3-0, when they take on Spartanburg Methodist at 12:30.

In game one the Vols would open the game up scoring a pair of runs, to go up 2-0 after a half of an inning. That was all Johnny Ray and Luke Seed would need on the mound. Johnny Ray (1-0) would get the start and go five innings of shutout work, giving up only two hits, while striking out six and walking one. Luke Seed would finish the game, throwing two innings giving up one run on three hits while striking out five. The Logan bats wouldn't go quiet adding two more runs in the 3rd and 5th, before finishing the scoring with a three spot in the 6th. Ashton Creal would lead the charge offensively, collecting three hits. Luke Brown would add two doubles and Sam Frontino added two hits and three RBI himself.

Game two saw the Vols jump out early once again scoring on an RBI groundout from Hunter Sullivan in the 1st and an Ashton Creal solo homer run in the 2nd. Dyersburg would tie it up in the 3rd with a 2-RBI triple, but starter Austin Ruesch would strand the runner at third. The game would stay tied until the 5th when Cody Jansen would score on a wild pitch to give Logan a 3-2 lead. The Vols bullpen would shut the door the rest of the way to give Logan the victory. Austin Ruesch got the start on the mound going four innings giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out five. Jeff Purnell (2-0) would pick up the win in relief, going two innings, giving up one run and striking out five. Andrew Zenner would get the save pitching a clean 7th. Luke Brown, Ashton Creal, Cody Jansen, and Zak Hartleb would all collect hits for the Vols.
