Pitching Leads Vols to 3-1 Victory over South Suburban

Marion, IL - The Logan Vols used quality pitching and timely hitting to take the 3-1 victory in the series opener with South Suburban on Sunday night. The win puts the Vols at 6-0 on the year. The two teams will square off agian on Monday with a doubleheader at Itchy Jones Stadium in Carbondale. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.

South Suburban would take the lead in the 3rd, scoring their only run of the game, when a leadoff walk would score on a 1-out double. Volunteer Starter Austin Ruesch would strand the runner at third, to limit the damage. The Vols would answer right back in the bottom half with a clutch 2-out 2-RBI single from Sam Frontino to give Logan the 2-1 lead.

Austin Ruesch and Reliver Jeffrey Purnell would shut down the Bulldog bats the rest of the way. Ruesch (1-0) would pick up his first win of the year, going six strong innings, surrender one run on four hits, while striking out three. Purnell would shut the door, going three innings, only allowing one baserunner, while striking out four, and picking up his first save.

Logan would add an insurance run in the sixth when Zach Parks would plate Sam Frontino with a sac fly. For the game the Volunteer hitters would tally eight hits with Ashton Creal leading the way with three hits. Luke Brown, Cooper Trinkle, Hunter Sullivan, Sam Frontino, and Hunter Combs would add a hit each for the Vols.
