Kyle Surprenant is in his 6th season as head coach and his 12th season with the Volunteers.  In his first five seasons at the helm, he has led the Vols to an overall record of 184-61 (.751).  Under Surprenant the Vols have won two Great River Athletic Conference Championships and he has twice been named GRAC Coach of the Year.  Surprenant was also named the 2020 NJCAA DI National Coach of the Year by the JBB. 

Since joining the program in the fall of 2010 the program has amassed 393 wins including four conference championships and two Region XXIV Championships.  Since taking over the program in the fall of 2016 Surprenant has seen 78 of his players continue their careers at the four-year level.  A total of 145 former Volunteers have continued their careers at the four-year level since Surprenant joined the program. 

During his time at Logan, Surprenant has seen 27 current and former Vols selected to play professional baseball including 17 since being named the head coach at John A. Logan College.  Under his guidance, 39 Vols have been named All-Conference, 24 All-Region, 6 All-American, 5 Conference Freshman of the Year, 5 Conference Player/Pitcher of the Year.

Surprenant spent the summers of 2011 and 2012 coaching collegiate summer baseball for the Gastonia Grizzlies of the Coastal Plain League.  In 2011 the Grizzlies won the organization’s first ever league championship.  While with the Grizzlies, Surprenant coached 10 players that would go on to have a career in professional baseball.

Prior to joining the Vols, Surprenant was an assistant coach for his alma-mater, Kankakee Community College.  In his two years at KCC the program collected 99 wins including two Sectional Championships, a Region IV Championship and a District Championship culminating in a 3rd place finish at the NJCAA DII World Series.

Before getting into the coaching ranks Surprenant played at Kankakee Community College for two seasons prior to transferring to Western Illinois University.  After college he played professionally for one season with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League. 

A 2008 graduate of Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, Surprenant received his Master of Science in Education from Southern Illinois University in 2012.  He and his wife, Lauren, were married in December 2017 and welcomed their son Logan in January 2019 and daughter Caroline in October 2020.  They reside in Carterville.
