After completing his tenth season as head coach of the John A. Logan Volunteers Kyle Smithpeters has an overall record of 241-70  including eight straight seasons of 20 or more wins (not including Covid season 20-21) .

Coming off three straight NJCAA National Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearances (20,21,22) Kyle has also coached 10 All-Americans and 2 NJCAA Players of the Year (JAY SCRUBB 19'-20' Sean East 21'-22' ). This also includes more than 50 Division one players, Logan College has seen great success on the basketball floor.  The Vols program has also seen tremendous success in the classroom, with multiple semesters over a 3.0 team GPA.

The success of the 2019-2020 team, which was highlighted by a 28-5 overall record and a perfect 18-0 GRAC record and NJCAA REGION 24 TITLE. The 19-20 Vols were poised for a run at the National Title as they entered the tournament as the #5 overall seed at HUTCH before the season being cut short to COVID-19. The 2018-2019 Logan team is just another chapter in a long running story of success that has yet to come to an end. As history continues to write itself during this season, Logan has reached its’ greatest heights under the direction of Kyle Smithpeters. The 2017-2018 team spent time inside the Top 10 rankings in the nation and finished the year 26-6 winning the Great Rivers Athletic Conference (GRAC) for a second consecutive year, all while having 11 new players and the lone returner averaging minimal minutes.  The 2016-2017 season was highlighted by a 24-7 record while winning the GRAC and Region 24 Regular Season Titles and ranking as high as 7th in the Country despite losing two All American players to season ending injuries. The 2014-2015 campaign may be the most successful during his time at John A Logan.  Logan reached the national tournament in 2014-15, winning the Region 24 and District 16 titles to go along with another GRAC Championship and finished the season 27-7, setting a school record for wins in a season.

While being among one of the youngest head coaches in junior college and the youngest in the league, the personable Smithpeters has totaled a variety of “Coach of The Year” awards. Of the 10 awards, he has been named GRAC Coach of the Year 8 times throughout his 10 seasons as head coach.

A native of Southern Illinois basketball powerhouse Harrisburg, Smithpeters, 39,  graduated from high school in 2001.  A multi-sport athlete, he played two years of basketball for current Vincennes coach Todd Franklin at Southeastern Illinois College. While at Southeastern Illinois College, Kyle reached the national tournament twice with one of those being a final four appearance in 2003. Following his success at Southeastern, Smithpeters transferred to Southern Illinois University where he would play two years for Chris Lowery from 2004-2006.  High levels of success would continue during his two year stint with the Salukis as they would reach the NCAA Tournament in both of his seasons in the maroon and white.

Following his playing days, Smithpeters began his coaching career under Franklin at SIC.  He moved to John A. Logan as an assistant under Mark Imhoff for four years, during which the Volunteers posted a record of 81-42.

After 4 seasons as an assistant at Logan, Smithpeters spent one year as an assistant at Missouri State under first year head coach Paul Lusk for the 2011-2012 season. As a first year assistant at Missouri State, Kyle had a busy offseason recruiting with the Bears having 7 roster spots vacant. The Bears finished that first season tied for 3rd in the Missouri Valley Conference while notching key wins at Nevada University (who would go on to win the Western Athletic Conference finishing 28-7), and at then #19 Creighton University to open the season.

The sudden retirement of Mark Imhoff in 2012 after 26 years at John A. Logan and subsequent hire of Smithpeters made him only the 7th head coach in the history of the John A Logan’s men's basketball program.

Hailing from a family rich in basketball tradition, the son of Randy and Patricia Smithpeters, Kyle played for his father Randy, a longtime, Hall of Fame coach at Harrisburg High School.  His father Randy has accumulated 478 career wins, including 14 regional titles, 6 sectional titles, 2 super-sectional titles, and a state championship in 2013 when Kyle’s youngest brother Tyler was a member of the team.  Tyler would later go on to play at SIU earning 6th Man of the Year in the MVC honors as a senior in 2017-2018.  Matt Smithpeters, another sibling would play one year of basketball at John A Logan while  other siblings include Kolby, Ryan and the youngest a sister, Bailey.  Kyle is married to the former Carrie McLeod of Harrisburg and they have two children, a son, Tobey and a daughter, Tatum.
